Why do we need curbs?

TxDOT uses bump-outs as part of their Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program to improve pedestrian safety around schools. Bump-outs, also known as sidewalk extensions, help create more space for pedestrians to walk safely and make them more visible to drivers. These features are designed to make it easier and safer for students to walk or bike to school. Here's a more detailed look at how bump-outs work and their role in SRTS: Purpose: Bump-outs are primarily used to reduce the distance pedestrians have to cross the street, improve visibility, and narrow the travel lane, which can help slow down traffic. Implementation: Bump-outs are typically implemented at intersections, often where there are crosswalks, by extending the sidewalk into the street. Benefits: Increased safety: By reducing the distance and widening the pedestrian crossing space, bump-outs can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Improved visibility: Bump-outs make it easier for both pedestrians and drivers to see each other, further enhancing safety. Slower traffic: The narrowing effect of bump-outs can lead to drivers slowing down, which can be particularly beneficial in school zones. Encourages active transportation: By creating safer and more comfortable walking and biking paths, bump-outs can encourage students to walk or bike to school, promoting physical activity and reducing traffic congestion. SRTS and Bump-outs: TxDOT's Safe Routes to School program provides funding and guidance for projects like bump-outs, aiming to create safer and more accessible pathways for students to travel to and from school.
