Get to Know Mayor Johnson
Brian Johnson was born into an Air Force family and lived in cities across the U.S. before moving to Kennedale in 1996. His service to the City of Kennedale includes seven years on the Planning and Zoning Commission (1998-2005; Chairman from 2001-2005).

In 2005, Johnson was appointed to the City Council, served as Mayor Pro Tem (2012-2014); and was elected Mayor in 2014.

Regionally, Johnson currently serves as the Second Vice President of Texas Municipal League (TML) Region 8, Immediate Past Chair of the Tarrant Regional Transportation Coalition Executive Board, Chair of the Tarrant County Mayors' Council, Vice Chair of the Southeast Tarrant Transportation Partnership (SETT), and on the boards of the Tarrant County Homeless Coalition and Tarrant County 9-1-1 District .

Nationally, he serves on several National League of Cities (NLC) committees including the Council on Youth, Education and Families, the Small Cities Council, and the Transportation and Infrastructure Services (TIS) Committee.

Past service includes the 
TML Legislative Committee and the NLC Community and Economic Development Committee

In 2009, Johnson took a one-year, paid sabbatical to explore Kennedale’s transportation, development, and growth issues and was also part of the “Imagine Kennedale 2015” planning committee that developed TownCenter Plaza. In 2009, he was named Kennedale Area Chamber of Commerce’s Community Representative of the Year.

Professionally, Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Government and History and Chair of Social Science Department at Tarrant County College South Campus; and also teaches part-time at Dallas County Community College. He holds a bachelor’s in political science and a master’s in international relations from the University of Central Oklahoma.
